CAMPO DEL CIELO IRON METEORITE

How to acquire a rock from space for just a few dollars.

Campo del Cielo is a special meteorite. It fell 4,000 to 5000 years ago and is possibly the world’s largest meteorite fall and hundreds of tonnes have been found – the largest individual weighing more than 30 tonnes (Named the Gancedo Meteorite) . The strewn field is 1000 kilometers North West of Buenos Aires in Argentina and it measures 18.5 x 3 kilometers and contains at least 26 craters – the largest being 115 by 91 meters.

In 1576 the local natives had iron tools and weapons made from Iron – even though the natives did not have the ability to make Iron. The governor in northern Argentina got the military to search for the mass of Iron that the natives used to make their weapons in a place that the natives called “Piguem Nonralta”,which the Spanish translated as Campo del Cielo (“Field of heaven (or the sky)”). The search found metal protruding out of the soil and collected a few samples, which were described as being of unusual purity. The governor submitted a report to Spain but it was mostly ignored and forgotten. In 1774 a prospector (Searching what was by now legends) rediscovered a large iron mass that he believed was the tip of a Iron vein. He believed that it formed in a volcanic eruption and abandoned it as worthless but sent samples to the Royal society in London who deemed it meteoritic in origin.

Many tens of Thousands of specimens have since been recovered ranging from small sub gram specimens to tonnes. The meteorite fell in a swampy area and when found generally are covered in a black weathered iron shale. My Campos have been soaked in Acid which removes all of the iron shale leaving just the remaining solid meteorite. That is why my Campos are so nice even though they have been soaking and weathering away in a swamp for thousands of years. It is officially classified as Classified as a IAB Octahedrite.
