Emerald is a vibrant green variety of Beryl – the green color comes from trace amounts of trace amounts of chromium or vanadium. One of the most highly prised gemstones is the birthstone for May and wears well because of a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on mohs scale.. Important sources of emeralds are found in the Ural mountains, Northern South America and Africa. Australia also has several localities that contain Emeralds. Their are many famous historical Emeralds throughout history and they are mostly from the famed Muzo, Coscuez and Chivor mines in Colombia.
In Ancient Egypt Emeralds were considered symbols of fertility, rebirth, and eternal youth. Cleopatra is famous for her intense love for emeralds and claimed exclusive rights to the Egyptian mines. The Inca’s called them “Stones of the gods” and were used to honor their deities. Romans used Emeralds to show off wealth and status and the Mughal’s used them as talismans. Many middle eastern cultures used Emeralds to ward of evil spirits and for protection. They were highly south after by European royalty adorning many royal crowns – including the famous emerald and diamond tiara of Duchess Marie Thérèse
