This is high up in the Atlas mountains but 400 Million years ago during the Devonian “age of the Fishes” this was underwater in a shallow sea. Many types of creatures lived here including primitive Ammonites and Orthoceras fossils. If you saw a live Orthoceras it would have looked like a squid with a long skinny ice cream cone shaped shell. They hunted in swarms and even top predators got out of the way when they were coming. They were pretty vicious nasty creatures. Today this is a marble outcrop that is teaming with fossils from this time period. Locals quarry it out of the desert and make all sorts of cool fossil filled things with the marble. Here are some pictures from the area including one specimen where it has sat for the past 400 million years that we found ourselves and brought home.
